You never seen anything more exciting, than The Big M coming from behind his own net, and going full ice to score a goal. When I was a kid, you could hear me for miles, saying, "he scores".
That's goalie Eddie Johnston beaten by the Big M; and the number 19 on the Bruin defender's skate suggests Johnny McKenzie's number. If I'm right, and that player is McKenzie, who played right wing, then he's backchecking and could have been pestering Mahov for a long time before the camera shutter opened onto this moment. Based on the thickness of the number 27 on Mahovlich's sweater, and the 627 number on his glove, I'd date this photo from the 1964-65 season.
From Acomb to Zezel, VINTAGE LEAFS features photographs of your favourite Toronto Maple Leafs from years gone by. While the primary focus of the blog is on older photographs, the only steadfast rule is that players on the current team will not be showcased.
